VINEYARDS OF THE GUADALUPE VALLEY
BAJA CALIFORNIA
BAJA CALIFORNIA REALLY HAS A WINE COUNTRY?
YES!
There is no way to list all the Vineyards found in the Guadalupe Valley of Baja California. It is an ever-changing and always-growing number. There are well over a hundred and fifty vineyards located here.
Vino Tinto Tours is not representing this to be an exhaustive list nor the best vineyards located in the Valle. Each person's taste in wine is quite different and it would simply be negligent to represent any vineyard as the "best" wine in the valley. Those claims are best left to the wineries themselves.
These are the Vintners we have familiarized ourselves with and have found our customers agree are worthy of mention.
ADOBE GUADALUPE
Founded in 1997, this vineyard has a small tasting room but an excellent selection of wines. Outdoor seating . Adobe Guadalupe has 7 blended wines: Jardin Secreto (Secret Garden), Miguel, Kerubial, Serafiel, Gabriel, Rafael, and Polvo de Mar (Sea Dust). The Jardin Magico (Magic Garden) a sauvignon blanc and Uriel, a rose, wines go straight to bottles. The red blends age in French and American Oak barrels for 10 to 12 months depending on the wine.
ALXIMIA
Wine-making for this father and son team began in 2005 with two wines and has grown to five product lines including 13 wines. The white and rosé lines go straight to bottle, the Elemental line going to French oak barrels for 12 or 13 months, the premium line has a Viognier going straight to bottle and 2 reds aging for 15 and 13 months respectively in French oak and the Special Reserve has 2 wines aging for 30 months and one wine aging for 12 months in French oak.
BARON BALCH'É
From humble beginnings in 2000 with five labels to, now having 18 labels . The wine tasting is done below ground in their cellar. The Rincon del Baron line has a white blend going straight to bottle and a Clarette and a red blend spending 4 and 12 months respectively in French oak barrels. The Baron Balche line has a Sauvignon Blanc going straight to bottle and a Chardonnay aging for 6 months in French oak. This line also has 4 reds that age for 24 to 30 months in French oak. The Balche Premium line 8 reds aging for from 24 to 72 months in French oak barrels.
BRUMA
The wine tasting room and winery is built around a 300 year old oak tree. The tasting room is staffed with one person giving it the personal touch and quite the boutique vineyard feel. With only one person providing the tasting and tour, that explains the reason for reservations only. Not always available at last minute, so if you have interest in this vineyard make sure to book your tour well in advance. They also have a restaurant serving full course meals with preselected wine pairings. While not offered with our tour, we can definitely help with the reservation if available.
CORONA DEL VALLE
This vineyard has just the main label with two whites and five reds. Only one of their wines are multi-varietal. Their Sauvignon Blanc goes straight to bottles but their Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and their one blend, Tempranillo/Nebbiolo all spend 12 months in French Oak. Despite being a new entry into the Valle de Guadalupe, they have managed to have one of their wines included on the French Laundry Wine List. This vineyard has a restaurant on their property and has a real "mom & pop" feel to it.
DECANTOS VINICOLA
Having benn founded in 2011 and openening to the public in July of 2015, this vineyard is another one of the recent entries into the Valle de Guadalupe. The tasting room really spans the grounds of this winery. The wines have a new feel to them as the wine-maker is working to perfect his skill. They have five product lines: Reserva, Coupage, Joven (Young), Clasicos del Mundo, and Premium. As of August 2023, they offer 47 consisting of varietals and blends and a line of Sparkling Wines. This vinyard provides tours in English and Spanish.
DOÑA LUPE
Founded in the 1980's, it is not unusual to see la Doña herself walking around the wine tasting seating area. This family run vineyard has a very local feel with an indigenous entertainer playing flutes and rain sticks. They also offer a variety of jams that are produced on their local farms. Wines are new wines mostly going straight to bottle and definitely offering a sweeter tasting experience.
EL CIELO
One of the newest additions to the Guadalupe Valley but one well placed and nicely marketed. Beautiful property with vineyard tours, underground tasting room and attached restaurant makes for the full package. Three lines of wines: Astros, Astrónomos, and Constelaciones. The latter being their "top-of-the-line" has a Chardonnay, and a blend of Tempranillo (75%) Gernache (20%) and Merlot (5%) both aged for aged for 12 months, and another blend of Nebbiolo (70%) and Sangiovese (30%) aged for 24 months all in French oak.
EMEVE
One may find the name of this vineyard rather interesting: it is the sound one makes (in Spanish) when saying the initials of the founder and Patriarch of this winery, Mario Villareal. Mr. Villareal started his vineyard with the intent to keep his table and those of his friends flowing with a few bottles of wine, but at their insistence he releases some of his stock for public consumption. He started in 2004 with 44.5 of his 49.5 acres of vineyards covered with cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and merlot and offers a healthy selection of single variety wines. A modest tasting room, but a worthy vineyard.
ENCUENTRO
A beautiful property with breath-taking views of the most vineyard filled parts of the valley. The views are even more dramatic from their hotel rooms. Wine tasting here is a potpourri of wines. The wine maker here sells most of their wines through their restaurant. The wine tasting they offer usually consists of one or sometimes two of their own wines along with other wines from vineyards with whom they have cooperative agreements. The Wine-maker, when present gives us a tour of their cellar and a cozy cave decked out with a table and a few chairs..
L.A.CETTO
Founded in 1928, LA Cetto offers the largest variety and has one of the largest wine making facilities in the Guadalupe Valley. A staple of the large bus wine tours, this vineyard has less of a boutique feel and a can seem a little cattle herdish. (Is that even a word?) Limited indoor tasting and a large outdoor tasting and seating area, the staff presenting the wines are knowledgeable and friendly and many speak English fluently. If you are looking for a wine that is more widely available in Mexico, this is probably a stop for you.
LOMITA HACIENDA
Opening it's doors in 2009, Lomita offers some delicious wines made from their own grapes grown, processed and stored in their own vineyard. With only 7 labels to choose from and a dirt road to travel, you won't likely find a tour bus out here. But this is one of the gems of the valley offering one of my favorite wines. 4 red and 3 whites and 6 of the 7 labels are multi-varietal. Don't let that stop you. Another one of the Guadalupe Valley vineyards from whom the California Costco wine buyer has purchased, though I haven't seen a bottle there since early 2018.
MONTE XANIC
Founded in 1987, this vineyard prefers reservations and provides a fantastic view of it's property, man-made lake and surrounding valley. Indoor and outdoor seating . Monte Xanic has 4 product lines: Gran Ricardo, Limited Edition, Monte Xanic and Calixia Most white wines go straight to bottles. Some white wines and all red wines age in French Oak barrels for 6 to 18 months depending on the product line. Just as a point of reference, the US wine buyer for Costco purchases the Chenin Colombard (96% Chenin Blanc & 2% French Colombard) for distribution in California.
SANTO TOMAS
Founded in 1888, this is one of the oldest vintners with a wine tasting room in the Guadalupe Valley. Indoor and outdoor seating . Santo Tomas has 3 product lines: New wines go straight to bottles. White labels go to barrels for 12 to 15 months and the Reserve label goes to barrels for 12 to 18 months.
VIÑEDOS DE LA REINA
Although it is one of the last stops in the Valle de Guadalupe, this vineyard is not to be overlooked. They offer a panoramic view of the east end of the valley from the tasting room or the outdoor seating area. La Reina has been wine-making since 2006, and has two product lines; the Duquesa and the VR. The Duquesa has 3 wines including a white, a rose and a red all multi-varietal. The VR includes 6 single grape wines: Chardonnay, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo and a Malbec.
